Congrats! Miss USA 2016 D.C.

The newly crowned Miss USA is a 26 year old Army Reserve officer from District of Columbia. Deshauna Barber of Northeast D.C. captivated the audience in response to a question about ‘women in combat.’

Her response:

As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military. We are just as tough as men,” she said to lots of cheers from the crowd. “As a commander of my unit, I am powerful. I am dedicated. And it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States Army.”

Eonline interviewed Deshauna after her win, She said, “I still am waiting for someone to pinch me, I feel like I’m dreaming, I cannot believe this is happening. I broke down during the crowning when they put it on my head and touched it and said, “Ah!  it’s really there. So, I’m shocked.

The pageant queen, who won over the hearts of the judges to beat out Miss Hawaii and Miss Georgia, seemed genuinely shocked when her name was eventually announced. When asked what was going through her mind in that final moment, Barber gasped and gushes, “It was so emotional it’s been a dream that I’ve had for a few years now, I’ve been competing for a long time. I’ve watched so many Miss USA’s walk across this stage and inspire so many women around the world and I knew that it was something I wanted to do, and now that I’ve had the opportunity it was really hard to hide my emotions.”

Baber has already broken the mold on many fronts. This is the first time that a military member has been named Miss USA, the first time in 14 years, and third time ever that the District of Columbia representative has brought home the Miss USA crown. Deshauna plans to use the title and pageant to support veterans’ causes, tackle the issue of suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder among military members.

Deshauna come from a military vested family, her parents and sibling also serve. She graduated from Virginia State University (VSU) in 2011 and joined the military at 17.

We are excited to see Deshauna Baber’s future unfold as Miss USA 2016!
